Presentation of the IUM

The International University of Monaco is located in the Principality of Monaco on the French Riviera. It is an English speaking university which offers undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate degrees in business specialized in Finance, Luxury Goods and Services, and International Business.
Today, the IUM is part of one of the most important group,  INSEEC which is implemented in Paris, London, Bordeaux and Lyon.

The IUM provides a unique multi-cultural community of students representing 50 nationalities. In many ways, the International University of Monaco reflects the country where it is located: an International environment.

About Monaco :

Monaco is a small principality which advantage is its safety and peaceful atmosphere. It is a place where the quality of life is really amazing. Moreover even if Monaco is very small (1974 km2), there is a lot of things to do.

You want to cultivate? There are some good museum such as the ''oceanographic museum'' which is one of the biggest in Europe.

You want to have fun? The Cote d'Azur and Monaco are well known for their prestigious places where you can spend the most amazing nights of your life! We can cite the Jimmy'z which is the most famous nightclub of Monaco where all the jet-setters of the French Riviera meet all year. But it is only a preview of the numerous pubs you can find in the principality: Zelo's, Brasserie de Monaco, SASS, McCarty's... you will get to know them rapidly you can trust us !

Here is a little video which allows you to visit virtually our business school !

The program

The IUM has recently been part of the group INSEEC. For that reason, there have been some changes in the program. As it is quite unclear for futur students but also for the actual ones we will explain it.
As said before, the IUM proposes a 3 year-program which we call the BBA (Bachelor in business administration).  You have the choice between 3 options :

Option 1: It is a BBA of 180 credits, meaning that at the end of the cursus you will have a European diploma. The courses of the first year are in Monaco, but from the second year you can have the possibility to study in London, Paris or Monaco.

Option 2: You choose the BBA specialized in communication and entertainment. As the first option, it has a number of 180 credits. All the courses are in Monaco but after getting your diploma, you have the possibility to do your master 1 in Sup de Pub, a school located in Paris and London, specialized in communication and advertisement.

Option 3: It is the International BSBA which is the cursus we are personally taking. The first big difference with the two others is that it has 240 credits which is equivalent to not a European but an International diploma. Indeed, in 3 years you will finish with a master 1, meaning that you save one year compared to the European program. Also from the second year you can choose to study abroad for one semester in one of the International partner universities (Miami, China...). Of course at the end of the 3 years, you can choose to continue in order to get a master 2. Those 3 options include internships.

You have a real large choice and since you are interested in business, you can adjust your cursus according to your desire. Do I prefer to stay in Monaco, get a European diploma and do my 2 years of master somewhere else? Do I prefer to choose an option oriented in communication and advertisement? Or do I prefer to save one year, get an International diploma and discover a new experience by studying abroad ?
It is your choice depending on what you are planning to do for your futur.

Studying at IUM

You need to know that we are 382 students in the university. That means very small classes which allows a highly personalized follow-up by the professors and therefore a very advantageous working atmosphere compared to faculties or schools with a large number of students.
Professors are highly qualified as they all have PHD's. We can give the example of our Microeconomic professor Mr Ingo Bobel who teaches at the Harvard business school and who frequently writes articles for the Financial Times. Professors are very accessible and helpful, ready to answer questions and help the students who are struggeling in their classes. Staff is always available to answer any question and support the students coming from abroad who need assistance.

Since we have more than 56 nationalities this gives the opportunity to our students to create a wide network all over the world.
By the end of their 3 years course, students will more or less get to know everybody in the university. Students become very close to each other, and support each other through hard times, but also help each other overcome difficulties; we can almost say that students become as close as family by the end of their studies.Activities set up by the student association are here to enhance this link between the IUM community. We study together, we party together. So this friendly environment,  allows our students to feel confortable studying into.

Student association

The student association is composed by 8 members who are in charge of the student activities. They often organize entertainments for students and make our life much more funnier.Their door is always open to new suggestions !
Here are some examples of events that makes you enjoy student life !

Welcome dinner :

It was the first evening organized. In a beach of Cap d'Ail, we got to know each others. This evening at the waterfront in a relaxed and festive atmosphere was ideal to meet new students from all over the world who will share this year with us.

Halloween Party

Halloween, the night of fear was replaced by the night of fun. The IUM was present at the brasserie of Monaco where costumes were compulsory ! The craziest characters were represented and the student association did a real good job as we had a lot of fun once again !

Christmas Ball

Every year is organized the Christmas Ball, the most glamorous event of the year. At Christmas time, a huge evening is set up allowing students, teachers and staff to meet all together. This year, the event was at the hotel Fairmont in Monaco. Everyone was dressed up to the nines. We had a cocktail followed by a dinner accompanied by amazing student shows. We ended up the evening dancing all together at Jimmy'z.

Those events are just previews as there are several ones during the year.
The student association is doing a real good job and is very implicated in the student life. The members are always looking for new ways to entertain us and it is always a success we guarantee !

Current questions people ask about IUM

There are some informations about the IUM that are unclear for students and parents.
Here are the current questions that you may ask to yourself :

My level in English is poor, wouldn't I be lost in class ?

Your level should not be perfect to integrate the IUM. You need to have passed the TOEIC or an equivalent in order to enter the school or to pass it during the year. IUM proposes summer courses to improve in the language.  Moreover, many students and especially French students who had not a good level in English and even had a catastrophic grade at the English part of the baccalaureat felt this fear before coming at the IUM. But the environment in which you will be, will help you to overcome your weaknesses. Indeed, the lessons in class are very understandable. Also there are many nationalities and you will be obliged to speak english outside the class which will allow you to practice considerably.                             We are not better than you and  when you want you can ! Like everywhere you have to be motivated and to study in order to succeed.

If the school is located in Monaco, that means that the diploma is not recognized in France ?

You need to know that to be recognized in France, the classes should be taught at 70% in French, which is not the case at the IUM where every class is in English. That does not mean that you won't find a work in France it has nothing to do with it. The diploma will just not allow you to present the administrative exams in France.

I do not live in Monaco, where can I find an accomodation ?

It is really easy to find an accomodation in Monaco. If you want cheapest accomodations there are a lot of opportunities in close cities like Beausoleil, Cap d'Ail for a reasonnable price... The IUM will help you to find something at your convenience. If you live more far in Nice or Cannes for example, you can take the train as many students do and subscribe with special student prices designed by the SNCF. It will take you 20 minutes from Nice to Monaco.

What are ''credits'' ?

For each class you take you have a certain number of credits from 1 to 3. To get your diploma, you need to have a certain amount of credits, 120 precisely.

What is the difference of the American system with the French system ?

Apart credits that you do not find in the French system, there is the system of grading which also differs. In France you are usually graded over 10 or 20. In the American system you are graded over 100 % corresponding to letters from A to F. Here are the equivalents :
A = 95-100   A- = 90-94  B+ = 87-89  B = 83-86  B- = 80-82
C+ = 77-79   C =  73-76  C-  = 70-72  D+ = 67-69  D = 63-66  D- = 60-62  F = 0-59

Also the level you get in 3 years is not the same as in France. Indeed, the advantage of the IUM is that it follows an American program. In 3 years you will have the equivalent of 4 years of studies in France(if you choose option 3 cf program article), meaning that you will end up with a Licence 3 and Master 1 level. A real time saving !

What can I do after the 3 years ?

After the BSBA which is the post-bac programm in 3 years, you will have a Master 1 as said before. You can choose to do one of the masters proposed at the IUM in 10 months, which is also an accelerated programm. You can also do a master anywhere you want in the world.
